HR: More than Hiring & Firing
When I ask business owners how they define Human Resources Management, the response almost always given is “this is the department that takes care of hiring and firing/terminating employees.”
While this is accurate, HR goes far beyond hiring and firing.
Beyond the recruitment and termination processes, lies several additional HR responsibilities.
The HR team should be viewed as the company’s driving force behind its culture, core values, growth, and overall success as they work closely on their own or with management/ownership on the following key responsibilities:
Business Strategy: goal alignment, market position, resource allocation, overall direction, and productive and positive work culture
Compliance: ensurance that the company understands and follows required state and federal laws and programs
Document Management: everything from the employee handbook to required labor law posters, all documents designed to protect both the employer and employee while providing consistent expectations of the workforce
Employee Relations: onboarding, performance reviews, conflict resolution, off-boarding
Payroll Management: data entry, paper-to-electronic transition, time-off, withholdings management, etc.
When you have an HR manager or representative on your team, these fundamental duties are managed and ensure a successful business without management having to take time out of running their business.
